Athens AI Roundtable on AI in the Rule of Law

The inaugural “AI and the Rule of Law” roundtable is co-hosted by The Future Society, the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Intelligent and Autonomous Systems, Covington & Burling and the European Law Observatory on New Technologies.

The event, which will take place at the Grand Resort Lagonissi (14 miles from Athens International Airport) is designed as a small-format, closed-door, Chatham house rule international multi-stakeholder roundtable, starting with a dinner reception at 6pm on September 20^th, and ending at 1:30pm on September 22^nd.

The agenda, under the theme of moving “from Principles to Practice”, is squarely focused on examining the development of instruments (including standards and accreditations) for the trustworthy adoption of AI in legal systems, the practice of law, and related compliance.

The dialogue will be based on the recently promulgated law-focused principles of the IEEE Global Initiative’s Law Committee and on those of the Council of Europe’s CEPEJ, but also under the prism of the OECD’s just published AI principles. (Which will serve as a reference for US NIST’s recent mandate to develop AI standards.)

Confirmed or expected participants, in addition to the Council of Europe, IEEE, and The Future Society, include representatives of the EU Commission and EU Parliament (including the current chair of the EU Parliament’s STOA panel), OECD, the executive director of the UN Secretary General’s High Level Panel on Digital Cooperation, Partnership on AI (the consortium co-founded by Amazon, Apple, Google, Facebook, and IBM), senior in-house and outside counsel from the US and Europe, the US Federal Judicial Center (which trains all US Federal Judges),  the National Judicial College (which trains State judges), the European Judicial Training Network (the principal platform for the training of the European judiciary), Law Societies, including CCBE and the chair of the science committee of the New York City Bar, US and European academic centers working at the intersection of law and technology, including NYU Law, Cambridge University, and the Max Planck Institute, as well as several other stakeholders.
